How to Incorporate Your Sauna Into Your Skin Care Routine

Looking to go beyond the basics of your skincare routine? If cleansing, toning and moisturizing form part of your daily skin care regimen, but you’re looking to level up to achieve a gorgeous, glowing complexion, then keep reading!

In this article, we show you how to incorporate your home sauna into your current routine in four simple steps.

If you don’t own a steam sauna, are considering buying one or you’re making regular trips to your local spa, then read the section below to learn why saunas are great for the skin, otherwise, jump straight to step one.

Why Infrared Saunas Are Great for the Skin

There are numerous health benefits to owning a sauna. From reducing stress levels and easing pain, to improving overall cardiovascular health, taking a steam in the sauna can also improve the reproduction of collagen and deeply cleanse and rejuvenate your skin.

It’s one of the oldest beauty strategies for keeping your skin in good working condition, and for good reason.

Relaxing in a sauna is a great way to enhance collagen reproduction, an essential protein in the body that gives structure to your skin, hair, and nails.

By sweating out harmful toxins from the skin, opening skin pores, and promoting cellular growth by bringing nutrients to the epidermis, regular sessions in the sauna have been shown to improve the capillary circulation, while giving the skin a softer-looking quality.

Step #1: Wash Your Face First

Before jumping into your steam sauna, first thing’s first! Give your face a thorough wash. Remove makeup residue, sweat buildup or any grime that’s accumulated throughout the day.

As you’ll be sweating profusely in the sauna, you’ll want to avoid clogging up your pores, so your skin can expel all those hidden impurities. While you’re at it, be sure to drink plenty of water, before, during and after your session in the sauna, as you risk dehydrating your body.

Step #2: No More Than 10-Minute Steam

We can’t stress enough the importance of this next step. Spend no more than 10 minutes in your sauna. This is because after 10 minutes, the heat has a diminishing effect and your body no longer benefits from being in the sauna.

Set your sauna timer for 10 minutes, so you don’t have to worry about shutting off the sauna heat.

Step #3: Cold Water Submersion

Now that you’ve sweated out all those toxins and heavy metals, you’ll want to wash immediately in cold water. Cold water helps the pores to contract back to their resting size.

However, you don’t want them to close until you’ve removed all the dirt and debris (also known as salt and sebum) that was expelled with your sweat.

Step #4: Moisturize

Now that you’ve cleansed and toned your skin in the sauna, by naturally flushing out the toxins and impurities, and opening and closing your pores, now is the time to moisturize. Applying moisture to damp skin helps seal the dampness into the skin for a more radiant glow.
