Why PH Levels Are So Critical to Your Spa

Many people assume that free chlorine is the most important parameter when testing water.  if the pH level is too high, the chlorine simply will not work.  Instead bacteria will flourish and bathers will be put at risk of infection.

pH 7.2 is the optimum level for bather comfort and equipment longevity.  If the pH level rises significantly above this, free chlorine becomes inactive and will not work.  At pH levels of 7.8 and above the efficacy of available chlorine is reduced to only around 30%.

Remember to test and adjust your pH regularly to ensure your spa water is safe to use, and you’re not wasting money adding chlorine that’s not working hard to sanitize your water.  Don’t forget to shock treat the water frequently (weekly or after heavy use) to destroy harmful by-products.
